
The Police Service Commission (PSC) has intensified its commitment to institutional reform, announcing the dismissal of four senior police officers and the demotion of 10 others following various acts of misconduct.
These disciplinary actions, disclosed in a statement on Tuesday by the Commission’s Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Torty Njoku Kalu, come as part of a renewed mandate to enforce professionalism and restore public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.
Breaking Down the Sanctions
The commission’s plenary meeting, held at its corporate headquarters in Abuja, resulted in a wide-ranging disciplinary sweep:
- Dismissals: Four senior officers were relieved of their duties for gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct, and behavior unbecoming of public officers.
- Demotions: 10 senior officers faced reductions in rank:
- Three Superintendents of Police (SP) were demoted to Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSP).
- Two DSPs were reduced to Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP).
- Five ASPs were demoted to the rank of Inspector.
- Compulsory Retirement: Two additional officers were retired from the force “in the public interest.”
- Other Penalties: A total of 31 other officers faced varying levels of disciplinary action, including severe reprimands (10), standard reprimands (5), warning letters (3), and one letter of advice.
Conversely, the commission reviewed the cases of seven other officers and opted to exonerate them after finding no evidence of wrongdoing.
A Firm Stand on Accountability
The Chairman of the PSC, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Hashimu Salihu Argungu, emphasized that the commission would no longer tolerate indiscipline within the force.

“The current Board of the PSC under my watch will not condone any form of misconduct by police officers,” Argungu stated. He underscored that while the board remains committed to rewarding exemplary service and hard work, it will strictly match all forms of misconduct with “commensurate disciplinary actions.”
This wave of discipline follows a busy period for the commission, which recently concluded a significant promotion exercise involving 93 senior police officers, further highlighting the PSC’s dual focus on meritocracy and professional accountability under the leadership of DIG Argungu.
