​Ogun Resident Accuses Police Prosecutor of Evidence Sabotage

​Abeokuta, Ogun State — A resident of Ogun State, Mr. Adejare Olasunkanmi, has leveled grave allegations of professional misconduct and judicial sabotage against a police prosecutor, ASP Matthew Famuyiwa, following the acquittal of three men accused of a violent assault against him.

​Olasunkanmi alleges that ASP Famuyiwa, who handled the prosecution at the Magistrate’s Court in Isabo, Abeokuta, accepted bribes from the defense to compromise the case. The centerpiece of these allegations is the claim that 18 vital pieces of evidence—ranging from crime scene photographs to medical reports—were systematically removed from the official case file before they could be tendered in court.

​A Case Left Hollow

​The legal proceedings, which concluded on December 20, 2024, saw Chief Magistrate A.K. Araba discharge and acquit the defendants, Alani Adepo, Sherrif Adejare, and Adepo Quadri. In her judgment, the Magistrate noted a critical lack of evidence, explicitly stating that no photographs or medical documents were presented to substantiate the claims of assault and property damage.

​For Olasunkanmi, these judicial observations serve as unintended confirmation of his claims. He asserts that the Investigating Police Officer (IPO), Inspector Blessing Eduwem Peters, had originally compiled a robust file, including:

• ​Medical Documentation: Patient cards and reports from the General Hospital, Ijaiye, and Abraham Hospital, documenting injuries from the February 2023 attack.
• ​Visual Evidence: Crime scene photographs showing injuries, blood-stained scenes, and discarded weapons used in the assault.
• ​Financial Records: Bank statements evidencing an attempted settlement payment of N50,000, which Olasunkanmi characterized as an admission of guilt.

​Allegations of Impunity

​Olasunkanmi, who previously served as a litigation officer for human rights advocate Femi Falana (SAN), claims he has been stonewalled by the police hierarchy. He alleges that despite a petition filed on January 2, 2025, to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) for Zone 2, Lagos, and subsequent directives for an investigation, the Ogun State Police Command failed to take meaningful action.

​The complainant is now calling for a fresh, transparent investigation into his allegations of criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, and corruption against ASP Famuyiwa. He maintains that the disappearance of the exhibits was a calculated move to weaken the prosecution’s case, effectively denying him the pursuit of justice.

​As of today, these allegations cast a long shadow over the integrity of the local prosecution process, raising urgent questions about the oversight of case files and the accountability of officers responsible for safeguarding evidence in criminal trials. The Ogun State Police Command has yet to issue a formal response to these renewed accusations.
