ABUJA – In a move that marks a transition in the leadership of Nigeria’s Hajj administration, Professor Sheikh Abdullahi Saleh Usman has announced his resignation as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).
The resignation, which took effect on Monday, February 9, 2026, was communicated through an official statement released today. Prof. Usman noted that the decision followed a period of “deep reflection and prayerful contemplation” alongside his family.
Personal Choice and Constitutional Adherence
Addressing potential speculation, the outgoing Chairman emphasized that his departure is motivated strictly by personal considerations.
”I wish to state unequivocally that this decision is taken entirely for personal reasons,” Prof. Usman stated. “I have made this choice in good conscience and with profound respect for the sacred responsibilities of public service.”
In strict compliance with Section 3(6) of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2006, Prof. Usman has formally submitted his letter of resignation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR).
Gratitude to the Presidency
Prof. Usman expressed immense appreciation to the President for the opportunity to serve the nation and the Muslim Ummah. He described the appointment as a “profound trust” and a “privilege I will forever cherish.”
He also extended special gratitude to Vice President Kashim Shettima, citing his “unwavering guidance, encouragement, and support” as instrumental factors during his leadership at the Commission.
Legacy of Collaboration
During his tenure, Prof. Usman oversaw complex Hajj operations involving numerous stakeholders. In his parting message, he lauded the Board, management, and staff of NAHCON for their resilience and commitment to service.
He further acknowledged the vital roles played by:
- State Pilgrims Welfare Agencies
- Private Tour Operators
- Aviation and service providers
- The government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
”This resignation reflects no dissatisfaction with the Commission, the government, or our noble mandate,” he clarified.
Looking Ahead
As he departs, the Professor offered prayers for the success of the President and the incoming NAHCON leadership, expressing his hope that future pilgrims continue to achieve a Hajj Mabrur (an accepted Hajj).
Prof. Usman, a respected academic and cleric, leaves the Commission after a period focused on streamlining Hajj logistics and enhancing the welfare of Nigerian pilgrims.
