President Tinubu Mourns Nigeria’s Trailblazing Diplomat, Ambassador Joy Ogwu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Ambassador Joy Uche Angela Ogwu, Nigeria’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs and long-serving Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN). Ambassador Ogwu died peacefully at the age of 79 in a New York hospital, with her daughter by her side, her family confirmed on Monday.

Ambassador Ogwu was a distinguished diplomat, respected scholar, and a pioneering figure in Nigeria’s foreign service. Born on August 22, 1946, in Delta State, she had an illustrious career in academia and international diplomacy. She obtained her BA and MA in political science from Rutgers University and earned her Ph.D. from the University of Lagos, where she began her journey into international affairs.

Before her ministerial appointment, Ogwu served as the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), playing a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s foreign policy and enhancing the nation’s standing in global affairs. She was appointed Nigeria’s Foreign Minister in 2006 by President Olusegun Obasanjo, becoming one of the few women to hold the prestigious role.

In 2008, Ambassador Ogwu transitioned to serve as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, a position she held with distinction until 2017. During her nearly decade-long tenure at the UN, she twice presided over the UN Security Council—in July 2010 and October 2011—earning international acclaim for her leadership and dedication to global peace, security, and disarmament.

President Tinubu lauded Ambassador Ogwu as a trailblazer who elevated Nigeria’s voice on the world stage with clarity, integrity, and unwavering purpose. He praised her lifelong commitment to advancing peace, disarmament, and women’s rights worldwide. “Ambassador Joy Ogwu projected Nigeria’s voice with clarity and purpose on the world stage. She worked tirelessly for global peace, disarmament, and the advancement of women’s rights,” the President said.

Describing her as an exemplar of excellence and dedication, President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to her children, grandchildren, siblings, and the wider diplomatic and academic communities. “Nigeria has lost a remarkable public servant and a shining example of integrity and dedication. I pray for the repose of her soul and for divine comfort for all who mourn her,” he added.

Ambassador Ogwu leaves behind a legacy defined by intellectual rigor, diplomatic finesse, and an unwavering commitment to justice and equality. Her contributions to Nigerian diplomacy and international relations scholarship will be remembered for decades to come.
