The Federal Government of Nigeria is constructing a Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration (CEER) in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State. This facility, once completed, will serve as a national and international hub for research in environmental remediation and will act as a data repository for the Ogoni Clean-up Project.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari virtually inaugurated the construction of the centre on April 28, 2023, prior to leaving office. The CEER is a crucial component of the Ogoni cleanup initiative, aimed at revitalizing the socioeconomic conditions of the Ogoni people who have endured extensive environmental degradation due to years of oil pollution.
The establishment of this centre reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing the environmental challenges faced by the Ogoni community and promoting sustainable development in the region.
