As the 30-day fast begins this Thursday, President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Muslims to show kindness and love for humanity as this captures the essence of the Ramadan season.
President Buhari made the call on Wednesday in his Ramadan message to Nigerian muslims at home and in the diaspora.
In a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, late Wednesday, President Buhari explained that Ramadan is not only about abstention from eating and drinking, but is a reminder to refrain from all kinds of evil and transgressions that harm humanity.
The president also warned traders to overcome the temptation to raise the prices of food commodities to exploit well meaning Nigerians in this season.
“I am particularly aware of the activities of traders who artificially increase the prices of their goods, including food at the beginning of every month of Ramadan.
“This kind of exploitation is against the spirit of Ramadan and the spirit of Islam,” Buhari stated.
Earlier the Sultan of Sokoto and the President of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) announced Thursday as the commencement of the Ramadan fast in Nigeria.
Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar in a broadcast called on Muslims ummah across the country to use the month for extra prayers for the success of the new leaders that emerged from the just concluded general elections.
