HYDERABAD — A 23-year-old pregnant woman died by suicide in Medak district after being publicly humiliated by her husband, who cast aspersions on her character and demanded a DNA paternity test for her unborn child.

The tragedy has led to the arrest of the victim’s husband, G. Abhilash, a bangle seller, and his mother, Laxmi. Both suspects were apprehended by the Alladurg police on Saturday, June 27, following a formal complaint by the victim’s family, and have been remanded to judicial custody.

A Public Humiliation

The victim, identified as G. Sushmita, was five months pregnant at the time of her death. According to police reports, she was found hanging at her marital home in Gadipeddapur village, located in the Alladurg mandal of Medak district, on the evening of June 25.

The fatal turning point occurred two days prior, during a family gathering intended to plan Sushmita’s upcoming baby shower ceremony. In her complaint, the victim’s mother, G. Janabai, stated that she and her husband had traveled from their native village of Mothkupally in Vikarabad district to finalize the event arrangements.

During the discussion, an argument escalated, culminating in Abhilash openly demanding a DNA test to prove the paternity of the unborn child. Despite the immediate intervention of community elders who attempted to defuse the hostility, the confrontation left Sushmita deeply traumatized.

Driven to the Edge

”The demand, raised callously in front of both families, inflicted severe emotional distress and public humiliation upon Sushmita,” a local police official noted. Family members reiterated that the public assault on her character fundamentally shattered her mental well-being, driving her to take her own life just 48 hours later.

Sushmita had been married to Abhilash for approximately 18 months. Her family alleges that the DNA demand was the climax of a pattern of ongoing physical and mental harassment orchestrated by her husband and mother-in-law.

Legal Action Under the BNS

Following the incident, the Alladurg police registered a criminal case on June 26 under the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused face charges under:

  • Section 85: Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty
  • Section 108: Abetment of suicide
  • Section 3(5): Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention

”We have arrested both the husband and the mother-in-law. They were produced before the magistrate and subsequently sent to judicial remand,” confirmed Alladurg Sub-Inspector D. Shankar.

The victim’s body was handed over to her grieving parents following a post-mortem examination. Further police investigations into the domestic environment and history of harassment are currently underway.
