Politics Aside, For Now: Aisha Buhari, Melaye, Seyi Tinubu, Ben Bruce Spotted in Spain

Nigerian politics can be loud. It can be brutal on television, unforgiving on social media and almost theatrical during election season.

But politics is rarely as permanent as the arguments surrounding it.

That reality surfaced again in Spain, where former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former senator Dino Melaye, businessman and former senator Ben Murray-Bruce and Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, were among prominent Nigerians seen at a pre-wedding gathering in Marbella, Málaga.

The images quickly travelled across social media because some of the personalities have occupied very different positions in Nigeria’s political conversations.

Dino Melaye has been a vocal political commentator and opposition figure at different times. Aisha Buhari occupied the country’s most visible political family position for eight years.

Seyi Tinubu is the president’s son, while Ben Bruce has also been deeply involved in Nigerian politics.

Yet outside the political arena, people can share weddings, funerals, birthdays, family events and friendships without necessarily sharing the same political position.

That is one of the oldest truths about politics. Permanent interests often outlive temporary quarrels.

Politicians may attack one another today and still sit at the same table tomorrow. Supporters may interpret that as hypocrisy, while others may see it simply as an acknowledgement that political competition does not automatically cancel human relationships.

The important distinction is between political disagreement and personal hostility.

A politician can oppose another person’s policy, candidate or party without treating that person as an enemy for life.Indeed, democracy requires disagreement. It does not require permanent hatred.

The Marbella gathering therefore offers a useful picture of Nigeria’s political culture: fierce competition in public, but social interaction continuing behind the political curtain.

That does not mean political disagreements are fake. It means politicians, like other human beings, have interests and relationships that extend beyond election cycles.

And perhaps that is the lesson for the public too. The ballot should determine political choices.
