JOS, NIGERIA — The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly denounced the brutal mob killing of Ibrahim Mbaye, a student at the University of Jos, who was allegedly beaten to death over accusations of stealing an iPhone.
In an official statement released on Monday, NANS National President Akinteye Babatunde decried the tragic incident as a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers of extrajudicial violence. According to Babatunde, the victim was subjected to a severe assault, humiliation, and confinement in a room by his attackers, despite the fact that the alleged stolen phone was never found in his possession.
Emphasizing that no grievance or allegation warrants taking the law into one’s own hands, Babatunde condemned the culture of jungle justice on campuses and across Nigerian society. He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and the entire University of Jos community.
While commending the Plateau State Police Command for the prompt arrest of three suspects in connection with the murder, NANS urged security agencies to carry out an exhaustive, impartial, and expedited investigation. The student body stressed that ensuring all perpetrators face the full weight of the law is crucial to deterring future acts of violence and safeguarding students from lawless vigilantism.
