The police command in Enugu has reportedly arrested former councillor of Enugu south LGA, Henry Ogbonna.
He was arrested alongside six other youths for alleged conspiracy, armed robbery, cultism and unlawful possession of firearms.
In a statement on Thursday signed by the spokesperson of the command, Daniel Ndukwe, the police said the lawmaker and six others were apprehended at various locations in the state.
“The Enugu commissioner of police, Kanayo Uzoegbu, has reaffirmed the commitment of the command to continuously clamp down on unrepentant criminal elements in the state,” the statement reads.
“The reaffirmation is following the arrest of seven male suspects including a former local government councillor over various criminal involvements including armed robbery, cultism and illegal possession of firearms.”
Ndukwe said the arrest was made by the Enugu police in collaboration with Neighbourhood Watch Group (NWG).
He said the suspects had attacked their male victims and snatched their phones and car, but were arrested as they tried to escape.
“A brief description of the arrest and recoveries shows that the police operatives serving in the Abakpa police division of the command, in synergy with the NWG, on 6th of December, arrested one Ndubuisi Ugochukwu Eze Oboro, aged 27,” Ndukwe said.
“The suspect and cohorts who escaped had attacked their male victim, dispossessed him of his phones and snatched his Toyota Camry car in the process.
“They were on the verge of escaping when some police operatives swooped on them, arrested the suspects and recovered one locally made double barreled piston and the vehicle.”
