Abuja – Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has affirmed his intention to run for the presidency again in 2027, reiterating his commitment to the Labour Party. He made this declaration in a recent video circulating on the party’s WhatsApp platform, addressing a group of young supporters.

Obi, who will be 65 by the time of the 2027 elections, also expressed his personal belief that politicians should have a retirement age for public office, noting he wouldn’t want to be contesting elections in his 70s.
During the 7-minute, 16-second video, Obi directly attributed the ongoing internal crises within major opposition parties, including the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to the influence of the current government. “What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government, quote me anywhere,” Obi stated emphatically.
He drew a parallel to a past experience during the Yar’Adua administration, where, according to him, a problem within his party was resolved after the then-President intervened and instructed the INEC Chairman, Prof. Maurice Iwu, to ensure party stability. Obi suggested that the current administration, in contrast, actively fosters disunity within opposition ranks. “But today, in all the parties, there are problems; these are deliberate problems caused by the system. These are some of the things I want to clean up if I have the opportunity,” he said, emphasizing the need for a strong opposition for a functional democratic system.
Despite ongoing leadership disputes within the Labour Party, with factions vying for control, Obi has consistently maintained his allegiance. Recent reports indicate the Labour Party’s National Working Committee (NWC) has endorsed Obi for the 2027 presidency, highlighting confidence in his ability to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). However, other reports suggest complexities, with some party leaders reportedly denying an automatic ticket for Obi and emphasizing the need for due process.
Obi also appealed to Nigerian youths and the wider electorate not to be disheartened by the challenges, urging them to take ownership of their votes and ensure they count. He acknowledged that those benefiting from the current system would naturally resist positive change.
The former Anambra State Governor’s declaration comes amidst speculation about potential political realignments ahead of 2027, including discussions of a possible coalition between opposition figures. However, Obi’s clear statement reaffirms his focus on the Labour Party platform.
