LONDON — Peter Mandelson, the former British Ambassador to the United States and a central figure of the “New Labour” era, was arrested by Metropolitan Police on Monday. The arrest marks a dramatic escalation in the investigation into his long-standing ties with deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Mandelson, 72, was detained at a residence in Camden on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The move follows a weeks-long forensic review of the “Epstein Files”—a massive cache of more than 3 million documents released by the U.S. Justice Department.
Allegations of Financial Leaks
The investigation focuses on whether Mandelson, while serving as Business Secretary during the 2008–2010 global financial crisis, shared market-sensitive information with Epstein.
Leaked emails allegedly show Mandelson forwarding confidential government briefings to the financier, including:
- Internal reports on a proposed £20 billion state asset sale.
- Early warnings regarding a €500 billion Eurozone bailout hours before it was officially announced.
- Discussions regarding the lobbying of government officials to reduce taxes on bankers’ bonuses.
Detectives also searched two properties linked to Mandelson in Wiltshire and Camden. While Mandelson has admitted his association with Epstein was a “lapse in judgment” and issued an unequivocal apology to Epstein’s victims, he has consistently denied any criminal wrongdoing.
A Week of Historic Arrests
Mandelson’s detention comes just four days after the historic arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the brother of King Charles III. The former prince was also questioned on suspicion of misconduct in public office related to claims he shared confidential trade reports with Epstein during his tenure as a UK trade envoy.
The twin arrests have sent shockwaves through the British establishment, as the Epstein files continue to expose the depth of the financier’s influence within the highest corridors of power in London.
Political Fallout
The scandal has already ended Mandelson’s formal political career. He was dismissed from his post as Ambassador to Washington by Prime Minister Keir Starmer in September 2025 and resigned from the House of Lords earlier this month as the government moved to strip him of his peerage.
Mandelson remains in custody for questioning. Under UK law, police may hold a suspect for up to 24 hours before a charge must be brought or an extension sought.
