OWERRI — Residents and students of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) were plunged into a night of terror on Wednesday as suspected gunmen launched a violent invasion of the Eziobodo community in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.
The attack, which began late in the evening, triggered a mass exodus from the area. Viral video footage captured the ensuing chaos, showing students, local traders, and motorists fleeing into the darkness as the sound of heavy gunfire echoed through the streets.
One harrowing video featured a commercial motorcyclist seated on a bench, his white singlet heavily stained with blood. The victim, who sustained a head injury, recounted a narrow escape after a passenger insisted on traveling to Eziobodo despite brewing reports of danger. The rider noted that he had observed “unusual activities” along the road shortly before the gunmen struck.
While official casualty figures remain unconfirmed, the psychological impact on the university community has been profound. Many students have reportedly abandoned their off-campus hostels, seeking refuge in safer parts of the state capital or within the university’s high-security zones.
The Imo State Police Command has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the identities of the assailants or the specific motive behind the raid. However, the incident follows a disturbing trend of rising insecurity in Owerri West, where neighbouring communities such as Orogwe and Ihiagwa have previously been flashpoints for similar violence.
Security experts have raised concerns over the vulnerability of host communities surrounding federal institutions, urging the state government to deploy a “show of force” to deter further incursions. As of Thursday morning, a tense calm has returned to Eziobodo, though many shops remain shuttered and the streets largely deserted.
