The Oyo State Government has officially refuted widespread reports of a kidnapping at the College of Nursing sciences, Kishi campus, labeling the claims as baseless and orchestrated to incite public panic.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Hon. Olusegun Olayiwola, clarified that the alarm was triggered by unfounded rumors. This misinformation reportedly caused significant distress among the student body, faculty, and the local Kishi community before official verification could take place.
Security Assessment and Verification
Following the initial reports, the college management, led by the Provost of the College of Nursing, Eleyele, Dr. Gbonjubola Owolabi, conducted a comprehensive internal review. The findings, corroborated by on-ground security personnel, confirmed that every student and staff member was accounted for.
”There was no kidnapping incident on the Kishi campus. We have verified this with all relevant security agencies and internal heads of departments,” Dr. Owolabi stated.
Government Stance on Cybercrime
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, emphasized that the state has a zero-tolerance policy for the deliberate spread of “malicious rumors.” He reminded the public that disseminating false information is a punishable offense under current cybercrime laws.
To ensure continued peace of mind, the government has directed security agencies to:
- Investigate the source of the false alarm to prevent recurrence.
- Increase surveillance and patrol frequency around the Kishi campus.
- Strengthen communication links between the school management and local community leaders.
Advice to Parents and Guardians
The state government is urging parents and the general public to remain calm and ignore the viral reports. Authorities advised stakeholders to rely solely on official government channels or the college’s formal communication desk for any security-related updates.
