OSOGBO — The Osun State Police Command has formally summoned Senator Francis Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East Senatorial District, following nationwide outrage over a viral video in which he directed supporters to “kill” members of the rival Accord Party.
The controversial remarks were allegedly made by the lawmaker in Ilesa during a campaign stop for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the high-stakes August 15 governorship election.
In an official letter dated August 11, 2026, and signed by the Commissioner of Police for Elections in Osun State, Samuel Etaifo Erale, Senator Fadahunsi was ordered to report to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Osogbo. The summons required his appearance to “clarify the circumstances” surrounding statements the command categorized as threatening, inciting, and intimidating.
Viral Video Sparks Outrage
The political atmosphere in the state grew tense on Tuesday after video footage circulated widely across electronic and social media platforms. In the clip, the senator was captured addressing party loyalists in Yoruba, stating: “From now on, whenever you see Accord members, kill them.”
The incendiary comments drew sharp condemnation from various quarters, prompting swift security and administrative interest as the state counts down to Saturday’s ballot. State authorities and opposing camps flagged the rhetoric as a severe security threat capable of plunging the election period into violence.
Damage Control Fails to Stop Probe
In the wake of the public backlash, the lawmaker’s media team scrambled to contain the damage, issuing a statement claiming his words were taken out of context. According to his handlers, Fadahunsi was merely urging his supporters to overwhelmingly reject the Accord Party at the ballot box through lawful, peaceful, and democratic means.
However, the clarification did little to quell public outcry or halt police action. Confirming the development, the command reiterated that security agencies remain on high alert to clamp down on hate speech, incitement, and any form of electoral violence as the Osun governorship election approaches.
