Osun State University Teaching Hospital in Osogbo, Osun State, has announced that its mortuary is currently congested with unclaimed bodies.
Relatives who have corpses in the mortuary unit between January 2019 and June 2023 are urged to retrieve them within 14 days.
Failure to claim the bodies within the specified timeframe will result in mass burial as an alternative to decongest the mortuary, according to a statement issued by the hospital’s management on Saturday.

Similarly, in September 2023, the Federal Medical Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, issued a two-week ultimatum for the retrieval of nine unclaimed corpses from its mortuary.
This decision was made because some of the corpses had been at the facility since 2021 and 2022, exceeding the permitted time limit of six months.
Unclaimed bodies in hospital mortuaries may result from relatives being unaware of their whereabouts or avoiding claiming them due to accumulated bills.
