OSAN, South Korea — In a tragic incident early Monday morning, a woman’s attempt to kill a cockroach using a makeshift flamethrower sparked a devastating fire in a residential apartment building in Osan, Gyeonggi Province. The blaze claimed the life of a neighbour and injured several others, police confirmed.
The fire broke out at approximately 5:30 a.m. in a five-story apartment block when a resident, a woman in her 20s, ignited flammable spray from an aerosol can with a lighter in an effort to exterminate a cockroach. The crude device quickly caused flames to engulf parts of her apartment and spread rapidly through stairwells and hallways, complicating evacuation efforts.
Authorities report that a woman in her 30s, a Chinese national and neighbour residing on the fifth floor, died while attempting to rescue her infant from the smoke-filled unit. Though the baby survived, eight other residents were treated for smoke inhalation following the accident.
Firefighters worked swiftly to extinguish the blaze within 40 minutes, but the damage was severe and the human toll significant. Police are currently seeking to arrest the suspected woman on charges of negligence resulting in death.
This incident dramatizes the dangers of DIY pest control methods involving open flames and flammable products, which have gained popularity on social media platforms despite repeated warnings from safety officials.
Experts caution against using improvised flamethrowers for pest control, noting the extreme fire hazard in enclosed living spaces. This is not the first such accident worldwide linked to similar practices. Local authorities are reviewing building safety regulations and evacuation procedures in multi-unit apartment complexes to prevent future tragedies.
Residents and readers are urged to rely on safe, approved pest management methods and heed public safety advisories to avoid placing themselves and neighbours in harm’s way.
This tragic fire underscores the urgent need for heightened awareness around the risks of homemade flamethrowers and the importance of fire safety education in residential communities.
