Ondo Varsities Shut Down as Non-Teaching Staff Begin Indefinite Strike

AKURE — Non-teaching staff across three Ondo State-owned universities have declared a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike beginning midnight on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, shutting down academic support services over the state government’s failure to implement a federal government-unions agreement and pay associated allowances.

The strike affects the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT); the Ondo State Government has not yet issued a public response addressing the unions’ specific allegations of non-compliance.

Why the unions walked out

According to a statement issued Tuesday by the Joint Action Committee of Ondo State Owned Tertiary Institutions (JAC-ODSTI), signed by chairman Comrade Tayo Ogungbeni and secretary Comrade Kunle Akinwonmi, the decision followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum previously issued to the state government.

Findings by ValidViewNetwork show the unions are specifically demanding the unconditional payment of the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS) allowance and other entitlements attached to the federal agreement, covering the period from January 2026 to date.

A broken promise on subventions

Checks by ValidViewNetwork show the unions also accused the state government of reneging on a previously announced 60 percent increase to institutional subventions, with the JAC statement noting pointedly that the government “released the same old subventions to all the institutions without the 60% promised for the month of August, 2026.”

That gap between promise and payment appears to have been the immediate trigger pushing the committee toward an indefinite rather than a warning strike.

Which institutions are affected

The affected universities are Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA); Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa (OAUSTECH); and the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (UNIMED).

The unions directed all members to withdraw clerical, administrative, technical, clinical and other support services across the three institutions, effectively halting the non-academic backbone of campus operations.

Part of a larger national pattern

Findings by ValidViewNetwork show Ondo’s shutdown mirrors a wider wave of industrial action tied to the “haphazard implementation” of the 2025 renegotiated federal government agreement with university unions, with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) having separately directed about 20 state universities nationwide, including institutions in Abia, Imo, Gombe and Nasarawa, to embark on similar action.

The JAC said Tuesday’s strike would remain in force until the Ondo State Government addresses the outstanding issues, with no indication yet of when talks might resume.

Every strike notice like this one carries the same quiet cost: months lost from an academic calendar that Nigerian students can never fully recover, over money that was promised in writing and simply never arrived.

Until state governments treat signed agreements with unions as binding rather than aspirational, Ondo’s students will keep paying, in idle semesters, for a dispute that was never theirs to begin with.
