The Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Akure into a modern, world-class state capital that stands tall alongside the capitals of any Nigerian state.

Speaking on Thursday, September 10, 2025, at the Government House Grounds in Alagbaka, Akure, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the ongoing urban renewal efforts around Alagbaka as only the initial phase of broader plans to upgrade the city’s infrastructure and landscape. He revealed that major roadworks, including speedy completion of Ijoka Road and the Irese flyover, are prioritized alongside other infrastructural projects to boost accessibility and urban mobility.

At the event, the Governor officially kicked off the construction of 32 units of four-bedroom terraced residential buildings specifically designed to house members of the State Executive Council. He emphasized that the initiative is both a milestone in addressing critical government housing shortages and a strategic step in enhancing Akure’s infrastructure profile.

“Historically, very few cabinet members have had access to secure and comfortable government-provided accommodation. This project aims to change that by delivering modern, well-appointed terraced homes in a gated community setting, ensuring both comfort and security,” Dr. Aiyedatiwa stated.

The housing scheme comprises 28 units arranged in five clusters of terrace blocks, plus four exclusive standalone homes. The estate will feature a gatehouse and a dedicated maintenance utility block to sustain effective facility management.

Governor Aiyedatiwa linked the project to his broader developmental agenda tagged “OUR EASE,” which strives to improve the welfare of public officials and foster long-term state growth. He also appealed to members of the judiciary and legislature to remain patient, assuring them that equivalent housing initiatives are planned for their sectors in due course.

Further to the executive housing project, the Governor reaffirmed his administration’s plan to launch an affordable housing scheme targeted at civil servants across Ondo State, addressing the widespread housing deficit within the public service.

Supporting the Governor’s vision, Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands, and Housing, Engr. Abiola Olawoye, described the housing project as a clear demonstration of the state government’s determination to reduce infrastructure deficits and urged contractors to meet project timelines.

The Chief Technical Officer of Cosgrove Investment Ltd., Engr. Baba Kalli, who represents the contractor, assured that the construction would adhere to the highest quality standards, reflecting a shared commitment to progress and good governance.

Legislative stakeholders also applauded the project. Hon. Biola Oladapo, Chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Lands and Housing, hailed the project as an enduring legacy that would foster unity, productivity, and enhanced welfare among cabinet members.

Traditional rulers, including the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for his visionary leadership and called for sustained development momentum in Akure.

The ceremony gathered a distinguished audience, including Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Adelami, Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, Secretary to the State Government Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti, Chief of Staff Prince Segun Omojuwa, Head of Service Mr. Bayo Philip, members of the State Executive Council, lawmakers, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other dignitaries.

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s urban renewal commitment extends beyond housing to the rehabilitation of key infrastructure and the completion of abandoned development projects dating back decades, especially in the Alagbaka area, signaling a comprehensive strategy to beautify and modernize Akure.

This initiative echoes ongoing collaborative efforts with federal agencies such as the Federal Housing Authority, which plans to build 1000 units of low-cost housing in Ondo State, enhancing affordable housing availability for civil servants and residents alike.

With these concerted projects, Ondo State under Governor Aiyedatiwa is steadily advancing towards a future of infrastructural excellence, improved living standards, and economic growth.
