Ogun Woman Escapes Health Crisis After False Scan; Police Arrest Lab Operators as Nurses Demand Accountability

ABEOKUTA – A terrifying medical ordeal in Ogun State has culminated in the arrest of several laboratory operators after a fraudulent ultrasound result nearly led a woman into a life-threatening surgical complication.

​The incident, which has triggered a wave of condemnation from the medical community, was brought to public attention by the Elegant Nurses Forum. In a press statement released on Thursday by its National Coordinator, Nurse Thomas Abiodun Olamide, the group detailed how the victim narrowly escaped a catastrophic health crisis.

​A Tale of Two Scans

​According to the forum, the victim originally visited an unregistered diagnostic center in Ogun State after experiencing health discomfort. The laboratory issued a scan result that suggested an urgent medical emergency.

​Seeking clarity, the woman proceeded to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), where a secondary scan was conducted by specialists. The results from the FMC completely contradicted the initial report, revealing that the first diagnosis was not only erroneous but could have led to “serious health consequences” if acted upon.

​“The woman later proceeded to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), where another scan was conducted and the correct diagnosis was made,” Nurse Olamide stated. The group noted that had the victim relied solely on the first laboratory, she might have undergone an unnecessary and dangerous procedure.

​Police Intervention and Arrests

​Following the discovery of the error and the subsequent outcry, the Ogun State Police Command intervened swiftly. Authorities raided the facility and apprehended the operators on Wednesday.

​The Elegant Nurses Forum confirmed the arrests, stating, “We are pleased to note that the Ogun State Police Command has swiftly swung into action by apprehending the operators of the said laboratory yesterday.”

​The victim has since been invited by the police to provide a formal statement to aid in the ongoing investigation. The police are expected to charge the operators with personation and operating an illegal medical facility.

​The forum described the incident as a “reflection of deeper systemic failures” within the Nigerian healthcare sector.
