As permutations ahead of the 2027 Ogun State governorship race continue to gather momentum, one name is increasingly refusing to stay on the margins: Senator Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello.

What at first appeared to some observers as a bold but uphill aspiration is gradually beginning to assume the shape of a serious political movement. For the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the signs are becoming harder to ignore: the atmosphere is shifting, the conversations are growing louder, and the pieces appear to be falling into place.

In less than two months since she threw her hat into the ring, the political temperature in the Gateway State has risen noticeably. Old assumptions are being tested. Previously dominant narratives are being unsettled. And some entrenched interests that may have once seen the race as a foregone conclusion are now being forced to take a second look.

With a steady stream of strategic appearances since February, a deliberate return to the public square, and now highly symbolic photo opportunities with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, many political watchers are beginning to accept a new reality: Senator Iyabo Obasanjo’s governorship aspiration is no longer just a declaration — it is fast emerging as a serious factor in Ogun’s evolving 2027 contest.

Her political re-emergence has been anything but accidental.

After formally declaring her intention to contest the Ogun governorship under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Professor of Epidemiology moved swiftly to redefine herself in the public consciousness — not merely as a former senator or the daughter of a former president, but as a tested administrator, seasoned intellectual, and a possible bridge between legacy politics and a fresh governance conversation in Ogun State.

At her declaration, she projected herself as a service-driven leader with a clear focus on inclusive development, women empowerment, infrastructure renewal and educational advancement. More importantly, she left no one in doubt about her seriousness, making it clear that she is not in the race to make up the numbers, but to win.

What appears to be adding a fresh layer of intrigue — and perhaps strategic advantage — is her visible alignment with the current national power structure.

In recent weeks, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has not hidden her support for President Tinubu’s reform agenda. At her declaration, she openly commended the President’s economic reforms and cited major national projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as evidence of long-term economic thinking. In political terms, that was no casual remark. It was a signal — and in some circles, a very loud one.

Given the historical complexities often associated with the Obasanjo-Tinubu axis, her posture has naturally attracted attention. But beyond words, optics matter in politics — and in Nigerian politics, they matter even more.

Her widely circulated photo moments with President Tinubu have sparked fresh conversations across Ogun’s political landscape. In a state where access, acceptability and alignment within the APC power matrix may prove decisive long before the primaries, such images are being interpreted by many as more than ceremonial courtesies. They project relevance. They suggest access. They hint at recognition.

And in a governorship race that may ultimately be decided as much by internal party arithmetic as by public sentiment, such symbolism can carry real political weight.

Yet, perhaps even more telling is the fact that her rising visibility is not limited to headlines and photo opportunities.

With unusual energy and renewed purpose, she has also been engaging structured political stakeholders almost on a daily basis. In one of the clearest indications that her campaign is moving beyond symbolic declaration to active groundwork, Senator Iyabo recently met with the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Ogun State, where she called for collaboration among political actors to reduce tension and curb electoral violence ahead of 2027.

During that engagement, she also rolled out a broader governance pitch centred on job creation through industrialisation and agriculture, digital skills development, healthcare delivery and education. It was a move that suggested a campaign trying to balance elite recognition with issue-based credibility.

Of particular significance was the disclosure by the IPAC Chairman, Mr. Abayomi Sanyaolu, that as of now, only three governorship aspirants had been formally recognised by the council — and Senator Iyabo Obasanjo was among them.

That is no small detail. In a crowded and fluid pre-primary environment where many aspirants are still testing the waters, visibility matters, recognition matters, and sustained engagement matters. In politics, perception often precedes momentum — and momentum, once established, can quickly become a force of its own.

Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, after all, is no political novice.

She is a former senator who represented Ogun Central from 2007 to 2011, a former Ogun State Commissioner for Health, and an accomplished academic and epidemiologist with international credentials. That combination of political experience, technocratic depth and family pedigree gives her a distinct identity in the race — one that few, if any, of her rivals can easily replicate.

Her declaration has clearly moved beyond mere ambition. Her public endorsement of the Tinubu reform agenda has signalled both ideological and strategic positioning. Her consultations with principal stakeholders have added weight and seriousness to her aspiration. Her growing media visibility has revived her political relevance. And those carefully watched appearances with the President have only strengthened the perception that, on the ever-complex chessboard of Ogun 2027, things may indeed be adding up for her.

And so, for Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, this may well be a season of momentum.

She is no longer just another name in the race. She is rapidly becoming one of the defining stories of the Ogun governorship battle — and perhaps, one of its most closely watched contenders.
