ABEOKUTA – An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court on Thursday ordered the remand of a 37-year-old nurse, Kehinde Adesanya, at the Ibara Correctional Centre following her alleged involvement in a botched abortion that claimed the life of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member.
The defendant faces a four-count charge including conspiracy, attempt to procure an abortion, and murder.
The victim, identified as 23-year-old Victoria Ariyo, was reportedly undergoing her mandatory service year in Abeokuta when the incident occurred.
Details of the Allegation
Prosecuting counsel Solomon Babalola informed the court that the crimes were committed between January and March 2026 in the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta. According to the prosecution, Adesanya conspired with others—who remain at large—to terminate Ariyo’s pregnancy.
The court heard that the nurse allegedly provided the deceased with drugs intended to induce the abortion, which ultimately led to complications and her subsequent death.
Further investigations revealed that an official of the NYSC, Olalekan Abass, has also been arrested in connection with the case. Abass is accused of impregnating the deceased and allegedly procuring the drugs used in the fatal attempt to terminate the pregnancy.
The prosecution noted that the actions of the accused contravene Sections 516, 230, 324, and 319 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
Presiding Magistrate O.O. Sam-Obaleye granted an ex parte motion for the defendant’s remand. Adesanya will remain in custody for an initial period of 60 days pending legal advice from the Ogun State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The case has been adjourned until May 26, 2026, for mention.
