The National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) are joining forces to transform the landscape of Nigerian identity far beyond traditional fingerprints and personal data.
During a courtesy visit to the NOA headquarters in Abuja, NOA’s Director-General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, commended NIMC for its foundational role in national development. He outlined how NIMC ensures every Nigerian has both a physical and digital identity through systems like the 11-digit National Identification Number (NIN) and expanding digital ID access, especially in rural communities.
Mallam Issa-Onilu emphasized that NOA’s unique mandate complements NIMC’s work by advancing the emotional and civic dimensions of national identity. “We don’t just need a means of identification; we need an identity that fosters belonging, patriotism, and unity,” he stated. This sentiment is reflected in the Nigeria Identity Project—a nationwide initiative aimed at nurturing national pride. The project utilizes digital platforms to engage youth, highlight government achievements, and encourage civic responsibility.

Engr. (Dr.) Abisoye Coker-Odusote, NIMC’s Director-General, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to innovation, mentioning the digital ID wallet as a recent breakthrough designed to make identification secure, seamless, and accessible to all Nigerians.

This renewed alliance between NOA and NIMC marks a strategic shift toward a holistic, values-driven identity system that not only secures personal data but also strengthens the emotional bond citizens share with Nigeria. The collaboration aims to build a nation where identity transcends documentation—rooted instead in shared values, a sense of belonging, and a collective vision for the country’s future.
