The reign of Osondu Victor Igwilo, the notorious international fraud suspect popularly known as “Ezeego, King of the Boys,” has come to an abrupt end on Nigerian soil. Detained since his high-profile arrest in 2022, Igwilo was extradited to the United States from the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja to face trial for an alleged $100 million multi-million-dollar wire fraud and money laundering scheme.

From Prison Kingpin to Transit

Sources close to the matter confirmed that the extradition took place on Monday afternoon, bringing an end to Igwilo’s highly controversial stint at the Abuja correctional facility.

During his time at Kuje prison, the 56-year-old reportedly wielded extraordinary influence. Insiders allege that Igwilo effectively controlled the yard, dictating day-to-day activities and commanding undue deference from several compromised correctional officers in an environment deeply marred by illicit dealings.

However, his influence could not save him from the looming reach of American justice. In a desperate bid to halt his extradition, Igwilo was reportedly swindled out of more than ₦200 million by a fellow inmate identified as Shettima, who promised to pull political strings to kill the repatriation order before recently completing his own prison term.

The $100 Million “Catcher” Network

Igwilo’s legal troubles trace back to December 2018, when the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas unsealed criminal charges against him. He was identified as the mastermind behind an intricate, international advance-fee fraud and money laundering syndicate that spanned multiple countries.

According to federal prosecutors, Igwilo led a global network of “catchers”—intermediaries deployed to receive, transfer, and launder the proceeds of crime to mask their illicit origins. The syndicate allegedly used phishing emails and fraudulent investment offers falsely tied to BB&T Corporation, a prominent U.S.-based bank, to deceive vulnerable investors.

To execute the scam, the network paired digital deception with elaborate real-world theater:

  • Impression Management: Operatives posed online and in person as high-ranking bank executives.
  • Forged Credentials: The syndicate utilized counterfeit documents and fake U.S. government seals to validate their funding offers.
  • The Pitch: Victims were promised massive investment capital but were coerced into paying significant advance fees to “release” the funds.

Once the victims paid, the money was funneled through a web of U.S. bank accounts, laundered, and partially converted into luxury assets—including high-end Mercedes-Benz and Range Rover vehicles—before being shipped back to Nigeria.

The Fall of the ‘King’

After evading the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for nearly four years on its wanted list, Igwilo’s run ended in March 2022. Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) cornered him during a tactical raid in the Sangotedo area of Lagos State. He was apprehended alongside three top-tier associates: Okafor Nnamdi Chris, Nwodu Uchenna Emmanuel, and John Anazo Achukwu.

With his extradition now finalized, Igwilo faces severe federal charges in the United States, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and aggravated identity theft. If convicted, the man who once ruled the Kuje prison yard faces decades in an American federal penitentiary.
