Niger’s Mining Crisis: Children Are Paying the Price for Poverty

MINNA — The tragedy in Minna did not begin inside a detention cell. For many children in Niger State’s mining communities, the danger begins much earlier.

It begins when a child is handed a shovel instead of a school bag.

The deaths of 37 people detained over suspected illegal mining have drawn attention to the immediate questions surrounding detention conditions and accountability.

But the tragedy has also exposed a quieter crisis: children working in dangerous mining communities because their families have few economic choices.

The International Labour Organisation has documented child labour in Nigeria’s artisanal gold-mining sector and specifically identified Niger State as one of the areas affected.

In one documented Nigerian mining community, the organisation found children working in mining because families depended on the income. Some children were exposed to heavy loads, dangerous tools and other hazards that should never form part of childhood.

The numbers underline the scale of the wider problem. An ILO reference based on Nigeria’s 2021 child-labour survey put child-labour prevalence in Niger State at 42 per cent, compared with 31 per cent nationally among children aged five to 17.

That does not mean every child counted in the statistic works in a mine.

It does show, however, that Niger State has a particularly serious child-labour burden.

The Congo comparison

Nigeria is not alone in facing this contradiction.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, children have also been drawn into artisanal mining communities linked to minerals that feed global industries.

The difference is that much of the international focus there has centred on cobalt, a key material used in rechargeable batteries.

UNICEF has documented children working in artisanal copper and cobalt mines in the DRC. One documented case involved a 12-year-old girl who spent three years collecting, crushing and transporting ore after her father died.

UNICEF has also noted that poverty, lack of decent adult employment and limited access to basic services are major drivers of child labour in DRC cobalt mining communities.

The risks are severe. Children in mining can face unstable pits, heavy loads, dangerous tools, dust, toxic chemicals and machinery.

UNICEF’s research on mining communities in the DRC has described mining as particularly hazardous for children and documented exposure to metals among children living and working around mining sites.

The comparison with Niger is not that gold in Niger and cobalt in Congo are the same. They are not. The connection is the human pattern.

A valuable mineral sits beneath poor communities. Global and local demand creates economic pressure. Adults struggle to earn enough. Children enter the chain. Danger becomes normal.

And education becomes the price.

What the Minna tragedy should force Nigeria to ask

The question after Minna should therefore go beyond how many miners were arrested.

Nigeria should also ask how many children are currently working in mining communities, how many should be in school, how many have been injured, and how many families depend on dangerous mining because there is no viable alternative.

The real measure of a mining crackdown should not be the number of arrests alone. It should also be whether children leave the pits and return to classrooms.

Whether families can earn without sending children underground.

And whether mineral wealth can improve the lives of the people living above it.
