In a remarkable display of academic brilliance, Team Nigeria has secured the prestigious Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category at the inaugural 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China.
This historic victory marks Nigeria’s first-ever appearance at the global tournament, transforming a debut outing into an unforgettable international triumph. The contingent earned their place on the world stage after navigating rigorous national qualifiers through the Nigeria Spelling Bee and advancing past formidable opponents at the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe.
The triumphant four-member squad comprises the 2026 African Spelling Bee Junior champion, Oluwadamilola Adeolu of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti; Abdurrahman Yusuf and Maryam Yusuf, both representing Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin; and Chinedu Okediachi of Madonna International Schools, Asaba. Notably, Ar-Raheem International College celebrated a double-medal feat as students Maryam and Abdurrahman both secured individual honors.
Education stakeholders have lauded the team for carrying the hopes of not just Nigeria, but the entire African continent, proving that young Nigerian minds can excel against the finest spellers from over 20 participating nations worldwide.
