Greater Sudbury, Canada – A 36-year-old Nigerian man, Lucky Ogbeijielele, is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, following a violent intimate partner violence incident in Greater Sudbury that resulted in the death of his 63-year-old mother-in-law and serious injuries to his 32-year-old wife. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, July 1, 2025.

According to the Greater Sudbury Police Service, officers were dispatched to a residence on Lorne Street shortly after 12:35 a.m. on July 2, 2025, following reports of a violent altercation. Upon arrival, police located a 32-year-old woman, identified as Lucky Ogbeijielele’s wife, outside the residence with serious but non-life-threatening stab wounds. She was transported to the hospital by paramedics.
Inside the home, officers discovered her 63-year-old mother, who had sustained multiple stab wounds and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two children were also found inside the residence, physically unharmed. Police believe the suspect fled the scene before their arrival.
Lucky Ogbeijielele, described as a 36-year-old Black man, 5’7″ tall with short black hair and a beard, was located and taken into custody shortly before 11:30 a.m. on July 2 in a wooded area off Alder Street. He had self-inflicted injuries and was transported to the hospital for medical treatment while remaining in police custody.
The accused has been charged with:

2.Attempted Murder
3.Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
4.Forcible Confinement
5.Choking
The wife, Lydia Imie Ogbejiele, and her sister, Esther Umoru, have since initiated a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for the repatriation of her mother’s remains to Nigeria. On the fundraising page, Ms. Ogbejiele shared a distressing account of the attack, stating her husband assaulted her with a knife, inflicting multiple stab wounds, and had already stabbed her mother repeatedly before she managed to escape the house.
All allegations against Lucky Ogbeijielele remain unproven in court, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Authorities continue to investigate the tragic incident.
