Nigerian Groom Vanishes After Visa Marriage to British Pensioner

​Dawn Otewell admits she ignored the glaring warning signs from the very beginning. When a charming stranger on Tinder who called himself “Brian Thomas” claimed his heart went “boom boom” for her, the then-64-year-old grandmother brushed aside a fabricated name and a mid-twenties age gap. Four years later, that romance has devolved into a grueling legal battle, leaving her health strained and her family’s inheritance hanging in the balance.

​The relationship progressed at a dizzying pace. After shifting their chats to WhatsApp, the suitor confessed his true identity: Bright Emokpae, a 27-year-old fashion student from Benin, Nigeria, living in Northern Cyprus. Despite the initial deception, Otewell forgave the lie. In March 2022, just eight months after their online introduction, she flew to Cyprus. What was meant to be a two-week holiday stretched into a month-long stay, culminating in a registry office wedding in Nicosia orchestrated at Emokpae’s persistent urging.

​Otewell returned to her home in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, while her new husband traveled back to Nigeria to secure a spouse visa. When the paperwork cleared a year later, she welcomed him to Heathrow Airport, eager to build a life together. Her brother, 72-year-old Rory, even secured him a manufacturing job at a local door firm.

​Almost immediately, the dynamic shifted. According to Otewell, her husband grew cold, detached, and financially demanding. He allegedly refused to contribute to household expenses—including new furniture funded entirely by her—while frequently sending money back to Nigeria and expecting her to foot the bill for their outings. The couple split in October 2023, only to reconcile six months later after Otewell received a £63,000 medical negligence payout from the NHS. In hindsight, she recognizes that financial windfall likely triggered renewed interest from Emokpae.

​The reconciliation was short-lived. Just before Christmas 2024, Otewell used £2,000 of her funds to embark on a Caribbean cruise with her brother in an effort to lift her spirits. Emokpae reportedly flew into a rage, demanding the money be handed over to settle his personal debts. Upon her return, he walked out for good.

​Now 68 and managing severe health conditions including heart disease, sciatica, angina, and irritable bowel syndrome, Otewell is desperate to sever legal ties. Having lived in the UK for roughly three years, Emokpae requires a total of five years on a spouse visa before qualifying for permanent settlement. Otewell is convinced he is intentionally evading her—believed to be hiding in Scotland while operating an online clothing business—to preserve his immigration status.

​Because she has not yet written a will, she fears her accumulated possessions, savings, and family heirlooms could legally pass to him if she dies before the divorce is finalized. While receiving guidance from the Citizens Advice Bureau, progress is stalled because authorities have been unable to formally locate him to serve the paperwork.

​Reflecting on her ordeal, Otewell hopes her story serves as a stark warning to others regarding international dating scams and immigration marriages.
