BROOKLYN, NY — The vibrant New York fashion scene is in mourning following the tragic death of Sheriff Shittu, a 30-year-old Nigerian designer who was fatally shot outside a Brooklyn lounge on Valentine’s Day.
Shittu, a rising talent who moved to the United States to cement his place in the global fashion industry, was killed in the early hours of February 14 following an altercation at the Quilox Restaurant and Lounge in East Flatbush. What began as a celebration of a friend’s birthday ended in a nightmare that has left a family shattered and a community calling for accountability.
A Night of Celebration Turned Deadly
According to witnesses and local authorities, the confrontation began inside the venue at approximately 4:25 a.m. Reports indicate that an unruly, intoxicated patron began causing a disturbance, which allegedly included the inappropriate touching of female guests. Among those targeted was Shittu’s girlfriend.
The designer, described by friends as a protector and a gentleman, reportedly confronted the individual. The suspect was subsequently escorted out of the building by security personnel. However, the situation took a lethal turn when the suspect allegedly opened fire as he was being led away, striking Shittu.
His younger brother, Fawaz Shittu, who was present at the scene, recounted the harrowing moments following the gunfire. “I was screaming his name. I was trying to wake him up,” Fawaz told local media, his voice heavy with the weight of the loss.
Family Demands Answers
Shittu was rushed to One Brooklyn Health–Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he was tragically pronounced dead. As the NYPD continues its manhunt for the shooter, who remains at large, the Shittu family is questioning how a weapon was allowed into the establishment in the first place.
“We don’t know how the security did not do the job and search properly,” said Salem Shittu, the deceased’s brother. “He was being kicked out… and he was being escorted out when he did it.”
The lapse in security protocols at the East Flatbush lounge has become a central point of frustration for the family, who moved to the U.S. seeking safety and opportunity. Before his life was cut short, Sheriff was working tirelessly to establish his own fashion label, blending his Nigerian heritage with modern New York aesthetics.
The Search for Justice
The NYPD has launched a full-scale investigation into the shooting. While no arrests have been made, detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from the lounge and surrounding businesses in the East Flatbush area.
Friends and colleagues have taken to social media to remember the 30-year-old as a “visionary” and a “gentle soul” who died defending the dignity of those he loved. For now, the Nigerian community in New York remains on edge, waiting for an arrest that might bring a semblance of peace to a family now planning a funeral instead of a fashion launch.
