Nigerian Boxing Icon, Obisia “Golden Gloves” Nwankpa, Dies at 75

Lagos, Nigeria – Nigeria is mourning the loss of one of its most revered boxing legends, Obisia “Golden Gloves” Nwankpa, who passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the age of 75. His death marks the end of an era for Nigerian boxing, a sport he graced with unparalleled skill as a fighter and later shaped as a coach.

Born on May 19, 1950, in Lagos, Nwankpa’s illustrious career spanned decades, earning him a place among the nation’s greatest athletes. Affectionately known as “Golden Gloves” for his formidable prowess in the ring, he first rose to prominence as an amateur boxer. He proudly represented Nigeria at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Germany and achieved significant success at the 1973 All-Africa Games in Lagos, where he secured a gold medal in the light-welterweight category. His winning streak continued at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand, where he also clinched gold.

Transitioning to professional boxing, Nwankpa’s career flourished throughout the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. He held multiple prestigious titles, including the Nigerian National Lightweight Champion, African Boxing Union (ABU) Lightweight Champion, and Commonwealth Lightweight Champion. His talent was recognized globally, as he was once ranked as the number one contender for the coveted World Boxing Council (WBC) Light-Welterweight Title, participating in numerous high-stakes championship bouts.

Beyond his fighting career, Nwankpa dedicated his life to nurturing new talent. He served as the head coach of the Nigerian boxing team, leading them to the Olympic Games in 2004 and 2008, where he continued to inspire and mentor a new generation of boxers.

In recent times, Obisia Nwankpa had been battling severe health challenges. A family member revealed in September 2024 that he was suffering from dementia and other ailments, which had significantly worsened, confining him to a wheelchair and rendering him unable to speak. His daughter had previously spoken on his behalf, highlighting his profound memory loss and inability to recognize people or events.
