In a dramatic rescue operation that has captivated the world, two workers were pulled alive from a flooded tunnel in Nepal more than a week after a catastrophic flash flood killed over 1,200 people.

Rescuers heard voices early on Friday and worked tirelessly to extract Sanjaya Shah and Kabir Maharjan, with at least 39 others still feared trapped inside the Trishuli 3A Hydropower Project.

A Glimmer of Hope Amid the Mud

ValidViewNetwork gathered that in a moment of hope amid overwhelming devastation, two workers have been pulled alive from a tunnel in Nepal more than a week after a catastrophic flash flood on the Nepal-Tibet border killed over 1,200 people.

A video shared by BBC News showed the emotional moment rescue teams pulled two survivors from a flooded tunnel.

Emergency workers cheered as they lifted Sanjaya Shah and Kabir Maharjan to safety, marking a rare moment of hope in a disaster that has claimed over 1,200 lives and left more than 5,000 people missing.

The video has since gone viral, with millions watching the dramatic rescue unfold.

“Rescue teams are still working to save more people said to be trapped inside,” the BBC wrote in its caption.

Nine Days of Darkness

The two survivors had been trapped inside the Trishuli 3A Hydropower Project for nine days after a massive wall of water and debris crashed downstream, taking buildings, roads, and vehicles with it.

The flash flooding, which struck the Nepal-Tibet border, is believed to have been caused by a glacial collapse, with scientists suggesting climate change may have been a factor.

Moments after the seismic even, initially mistaken for an earthquake, a devastating wave of water and mud swept through the region.

More than 1,200 people have been confirmed dead, with over 5,000 still missing.

At least 150 others are still feared trapped in a vast network of mud-filled tunnels along Nepal’s Trishuli River.

A Race Against Time

Early on Friday morning, rescuers heard voices coming from deep within the tunnel. Engineers had been pumping air into the tunnels as part of a massive rescue operation, and the discovery of survivors sparked a renewed sense of urgency.

“We are waiting for more and more people to be rescued,” Nepal’s Communications Minister, Bikram Timilsina, wrote on Facebook.

“A heartfelt thank you to all those who worked tirelessly day and night to rescue two people alive! Efforts and prayers are under way to rescue more and more survivors.”

The rescue operation has been ongoing for more than a week, with teams working around the clock to pump water and mud out of the tunnels.

The discovery of survivors has given hope that others may still be alive, trapped in pockets of air deep within the mud-filled caverns.

The Science of Disaster

Scientists are still studying the exact cause of the flash flooding, but it is believed to have been triggered by a glacial collapse, a phenomenon increasingly linked to rising global temperatures.

The disaster has reignited debates about the impact of climate change on the world’s most vulnerable regions.

Nepal, a country with a rapidly growing hydropower sector, has developed numerous projects alongside its mountainous river systems.

However, the disaster has raised urgent questions about the safety of such infrastructure in the face of extreme weather events.

A Lesson for Nigerian Youths

This tragedy is a sobering reminder of the power of nature and the fragility of human life. In an instant, a wall of water and mud can wipe out entire communities, leaving behind only grief and questions.

For Nigerian youths, the lesson is clear: we are not immune to the forces of nature. While Nigeria may not experience glacial collapses, we face our own climate-related challenges, flooding, desertification, and extreme weather events that displace millions.

The same politicians who ignore climate change will never allow their own children to suffer its consequences.

Their children are protected, living in areas less vulnerable to disaster.
