Asaba, Delta State – Nearly two years after a National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) raid resulted in the death of two-year-old Ivan Omorhiakogbe and severely injured his younger brother, Omorhiakogbe Eromonsele, the family is still awaiting justice and compensation.
On July 13, 2023, NDLEA operatives conducting a raid in Okpanam, Delta State, shot the two brothers at their mother’s shop. Ivan Omorhiakogbe died, while Eromonsele sustained a gunshot wound to his left eye.
In November 2023, the Delta State Government and the NDLEA announced plans to send Eromonsele to the United States for medical treatment. However, 21 months later, the family reports that the trip has not occurred, and they have not received compensation for Ivan’s death.
Senator Neda Imasuen, representing Edo South, has criticized the NDLEA’s offer of N20 million as compensation, deeming it unacceptable. As a member of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, Imasuen stated the committee is seeking N100 million in compensation for the family, potentially from the NDLEA’s budget.
The family’s lawyer, Mathew Edaghede, is seeking N2 billion in compensation, citing the loss of life and the permanent damage to Eromonsele’s eye.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori stated in November 2023 that the state would assist the family in obtaining an American Visa for Eromonsele’s treatment. NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd) pledged to expedite travel arrangements for the treatment in America. However, these promises have not been fulfilled.
