Relief in Makurdi as Crew Escapes Unhurt
MAKURDI — Panic gripped residents of Utur Tse-Igboji in the Bar Council Ward of Makurdi, Benue State, on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, when a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) helicopter executed an emergency landing on local farmland.
The incident, which occurred along the Welfare Quarters–Mopol 13 Ring Road corridor, sent anxious crowds rushing to the scene. However, tension quickly turned to immense relief as military authorities confirmed that all crew members and passengers disembarked safely without any injuries.
The dramatic occurrence came hot on the heels of national anxiety, arriving just days after a tragic NAF plane crash in Igbokoda, Ondo State, which claimed lives onboard.
Tactical Success Behind the Maneuver
Addressing public concern, the Director of Public Relations and Information at NAF Headquarters, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, clarified that the aircraft was returning from a high-stakes combat mission.
According to the official military account, the helicopter had been deployed to provide vital close air support to ground forces pursuing suspected kidnappers operating in the Ogbadigbo area, near the Enugu-Benue boundary.

- The Pilot’s Discretion: Following the completion of the combat assignment, the pilot noted a technical indication while en route back to base.
- Safe Execution: Exercising standard safety protocols, the pilot opted for a precautionary landing roughly 10 nautical miles away from the airfield, setting the craft down safely on the Makurdi farmland.
Reassurance from Military Command

The NAF emphasized that the maneuver was a proactive safety measure rather than an operational failure. Following minor technical checks and secured protocols at the site, the aircraft has since been flown back to base.
