The Enugu State Police Command has cracked down on syndicates specializing in the destruction and theft of critical public utilities, arresting five suspects across three separate intelligence-driven operations within the metropolis.
The targeted assets include solar street lighting installations, urban road traffic signs, and heavy-duty utility materials belonging to the Enugu State Water Corporation.
Public infrastructure vandalism has remained a growing concern for city administrators, directly undermining urban renewal efforts and compromising public safety. However, a combination of prompt community tip-offs, neighborhood vigilance, and high-tech surveillance systems has yielded significant breakthroughs for law enforcement.
The first breakthrough occurred on September 27, 2026, at about 8:30 p.m. Operatives from the New Haven Police Division mobilized to a scrap dump located in the New Artisan Market following intelligence reports. Two suspects, Wisdom Nuhu and Moses Jonathan, were intercepted while attempting to trade a freshly stolen solar street light. Subsequent interrogations revealed that the pair had earlier dismantled and carted away the installation from Graceland Estate in the Independence Layout area of Enugu.
In a separate dawn operation on September 24, 2026, security architecture proved instrumental in curbing urban sabotage. At about 3:34 a.m., the Enugu State Command-and-Control Centre picked up suspicious activities along Abakaliki Road in the Government Reservation Area (GRA). Leveraging live feeds from the state’s security surveillance system, officers from the Abakaliki Road Police Division swooped on the scene, apprehending 35-year-old Chukwudi Nwigbo in the act of stripping road traffic signs. While an accomplice managed to slip away into the dark, operatives recovered multiple vandalized traffic signage bearing various regulatory inscriptions.
Earlier on September 15, 2026, a joint tactical sweep involving the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and local operatives of the Neighborhood Watch Group cornered two other suspects: 31-year-old Zubairu Hamanpedimso and Mohamed Adamu, 21. The duo was intercepted over a suspected conspiracy to plunder heavy-duty industrial materials belonging to the Enugu State Water Corporation. Recovered from their possession was a sack stuffed with iron components, industrial bolts, and heavy nuts harvested directly from water corporation facilities.
Confirming the developments, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed that all five suspects have already been charged to court and subsequently remanded in correctional custody pending the determination of their trials. Meanwhile, dragnets have been expanded to capture fleeing accomplices still at large.
Reacting to the successful operations, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, lauded the gallantry and swift response timelines displayed by police personnel and community watch members. Emphasizing the collective responsibility of safeguarding communal wealth, CP Giwa called on residents to maintain high vigilance and sustain the tempo of sharing timely intelligence regarding suspicious elements seeking to compromise public assets and security.
