Museveni’s Son Plots 2031 Succession, Vows Landslide Victory

​KAMPALA — Uganda’s political succession landscape has taken a definitive turn following an announcement by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the country’s military chief and son of President Yoweri Museveni. Kainerugaba formally declared that he will contest the presidency in 2031, laying bare long-standing ambitions to take over the nation’s highest office from his father.

​The 52-year-old Chief of Defence Forces and head of the Patriotic League of Uganda made the revelation through a series of posts on X. Expressing total confidence in his political future, Kainerugaba asserted that victory is assured.

​“I will stand for the highest office in the land in 2031. And we will win by the grace of Almighty God,” Kainerugaba wrote. He further claimed that he expects to capture 90 percent of the total vote, banking heavily on the direct political backing of his father, whom he affectionately referred to by the local honorific “Mzee”.

​“Mzee will be my campaign manager,” Kainerugaba added.

​This declaration clears up prior ambiguity regarding the general’s political timeline. Kainerugaba had previously signaled intentions to run in the recent 2026 presidential race, only to pull back and defer to his father, who subsequently secured another term.

​President Museveni, now 81 years old, has maintained a firm grip on power for more than four decades, having led the East African country since 1986. Over the course of his protracted tenure, Museveni’s administration oversaw pivotal constitutional overhauls—including the removal of both presidential age limits and term caps—enabling him to repeatedly extend his rule.

​Whether the elder Museveni intends to finally step aside or pursue yet another mandate in 2031 remains officially unconfirmed, leaving political analysts to weigh the dynamic between the sitting president and his ambitious military chief son as the next decade of Ugandan politics takes shape.
