Midnight Octane: 85-Year-Old Caught Racing at 110 MPH While Smoking a Cigarillo

In a striking late-night encounter that has captured widespread attention, an 85-year-old motorist found himself in handcuffs after law enforcement authorities allegedly caught him participating in a high-speed street race while casually enjoying a smoke.

According to official arrest affidavits and newly released body camera footage, the deputy clocked a grey Nissan 350Z convertible traveling at 110 miles per hour, alongside a red Chevrolet Corvette scorching the pavement at 125 miles per hour—all within a strictly regulated 45 miles per hour speed zone. The driver of the Nissan was subsequently identified as octogenarian William Francis Bosworth, while the Corvette was operated by 57-year-old Phillip Signorino, authorities confirmed.

​When the emergency lights flared and the grey sports car pulled over around 11:40 p.m. on June 12, the interaction took an unusual turn as the elderly driver appeared entirely unfazed by the flashing sirens. Bosworth appeared to smoke a cigarillo during the interaction with the officer, maintaining a remarkably calm demeanor throughout the high-stakes traffic stop. When directly questioned by the deputy regarding the suspected drag race, the senior motorist offered a defense that has since ignited social media, claiming he was merely accelerating to distance himself from the other driver who had allegedly swerved toward him. Bosworth explained his actions as “having a little ride in my favorite car,” per the video, adding that he had owned the vehicle since it was brand-new.

​The deputy, however, remained unmoved by the nostalgic explanation and proceeded to explain Florida’s strict anti-racing and super-speeder laws before ordering the driver out of the vehicle.
