The assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader by US-Israeli forces has triggered a wave of retaliatory strikes across the Gulf, shattering a fragile ceasefire and sending oil markets into a tailspin.
TEHRAN/BEIRUT — The Middle East has descended into a state of high-intensity conflict following the confirmed death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In a dramatic escalation of hostilities, Iranian forces launched a coordinated barrage of missiles and drones targeting key infrastructure across the region, including a major oil refinery in Saudi Arabia and targets in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
The chaos spread to the skies over Kuwait today, where the US military confirmed that three F-15 fighter jets crashed in an “apparent friendly fire incident.” While all six crew members ejected safely, the loss of the advanced aircraft underscores the tactical confusion currently gripping the region as international forces scramble to intercept incoming Iranian fire.
A Region Under Fire
The Saudi Energy Ministry reported a “limited fire” at the Ras Tanura refinery—one of the world’s largest oil stabilization plants—after debris from intercepted drones fell onto the facility. While authorities claim the fire is under control, the attack has already triggered a sharp spike in global oil prices.
The escalation is not limited to state actors. In Lebanon, the 15-month ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has effectively collapsed. Hezbollah launched a significant rocket and drone offensive toward the Israeli city of Haifa, prompting a devastating Israeli response. The Lebanese Health Ministry reports at least 31 people have been killed in strikes across Beirut and southern Lebanon.
In a surprising move, the Lebanese government officially banned Hezbollah’s armed activities today, though experts question the state’s ability to enforce such a decree against the heavily armed group.
Tehran in Turmoil
Inside Iran, the atmosphere is a volatile mix of mourning and celebration. While state media showed tearful anchors and crowds of mourners in Tehran, verified footage from Los Angeles and pockets within Iran showed citizens celebrating the fall of the regime.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have since announced a “broad strike” on Tehran, targeting ministry buildings. Reports indicate that Sayed Yahya Hamidi, Iran’s deputy minister of intelligence for Israel affairs, was among those killed in the latest wave of precision strikes.
International Response
A joint statement from the United States and six Gulf nations—including Saudi Arabia and the UAE—condemned Iran’s “indiscriminate and reckless” attacks, reaffirming their collective right to self-defense. Meanwhile, the UN’s nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, stated there is currently no evidence that Iran’s nuclear facilities have been hit, though the situation remains “extremely fluid.”
