LANSING, Mich. — Public health officials have confirmed the nation’s first fatalities linked to an unprecedented nationwide wave of cyclosporiasis, with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) reporting two deaths tied to the parasitic infection.

The victims, whose identities have been withheld, suffered from significant underlying health conditions exacerbated by severe dehydration and complications from the gastrointestinal illness. While public health agencies traditionally regard cyclosporiasis as a non-life-threatening condition, the historic scale of the current season has put vulnerable populations at extreme risk.

Michigan has emerged as the epicenter of the crisis, logging more than 11,000 cases—a staggering spike compared to historical averages of roughly 50 annual infections. State data shows that at least 193 individuals have required hospital treatment, with Wayne County, encompassing Detroit, bearing the heaviest burden at nearly 1,400 reported infections. Adults aged 30 to 39 have been hit hardest, making up over 2,200 cases statewide.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are tracking multiple overlapping clusters. A primary multi-state investigation has linked infections across nine states—including Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania—to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico and utilized by commercial distributors and restaurant chains such as Taco Bell.

Taylor Farms initiated a voluntary recall covering central Mexican-sourced iceberg lettuce, which included retail products like Marketside-brand packages sold at Walmart. Although federal investigators previously scrutinized and briefly questioned preliminary supply chains, traceback data and ongoing laboratory analyses continue to cement the connection between distributed lettuce products and soaring case numbers. Beyond the primary cluster, federal regulators are monitoring several separate, unlinked outbreaks nationwide as total domestic cases surpass 18,000 for the season.

Health authorities emphasize that Cyclospora does not spread directly from person to person, instead transmitting through contaminated food or water supplies. Typical symptoms manifest approximately one week after ingestion and include frequent bouts of watery diarrhea, intense cramping, nausea, and prolonged fatigue.

Officials advise consumers who possess recalled lettuce products to discard them immediately or return them to the point of purchase for a full refund. Individuals exhibiting prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms are urged to contact healthcare providers, noting that standard routine stool tests do not always automatically screen for the microscopic parasite.
