Meet Nathan Thomas, the World’s Youngest Male Professor

​An American engineering prodigy has officially rewritten history books. Nathan Thomas has been certified by Guinness World Records as the youngest male professor ever, shattering a milestone that stood unchallenged for more than three centuries.

​Thomas secured the historic title when he joined the faculty of Miami Dade College in August 2023 at just 18 years and 346 days old. When he stepped into his inaugural classroom to teach COP 2270: C for Engineers, he faced a room filled mostly with teenagers of his exact generation.

​Born on September 9, 2004, Thomas surpassed the legendary record set in 1717 by Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor at age 19 and held the distinction for 306 years. Thomas also edged past American engineer Alia Sabur, claiming the record by a slim margin of 16 days.

​A Lightning-Fast Academic Ascent

​Thomas’s educational trajectory defies conventional norms. He entered college through a dual-enrolment program at Miami Dade College at the tender age of 10, later transferring to Florida International University at 14. By 18, he had already accumulated both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering, graduating with top honors.

​Rather than resting on his laurels, Thomas views education as an ongoing cycle. He notes that teaching complex computing subjects forces him to grasp concepts on a much deeper level.

​Beyond the Lectern

​Thomas’s intellectual pursuits do not stop at engineering. He is currently advancing his studies at the University of Miami School of Law, pursuing a Juris Doctor degree with an expected graduation in 2028. He plans to merge his engineering background with law by specializing in intellectual property law tailored to STEM fields.

​Outside of academics, Thomas leads the life of a typical young adult. He enjoys basketball, tennis, and golf, roots passionately for the Boston Celtics and New England Patriots, and balances playing classical piano with listening to Drake and EDM.

​Reflecting on his record-breaking journey, Thomas offers a grounded piece of advice to aspiring students: avoid the trap of comparing personal timelines with others. Instead, he emphasizes consistent self-improvement, patience, and sticking to what genuinely works.
