A man in northern Egypt this week stabbed and injured his wife then went home and killed his children, before committing suicide.
The man, who reports said was in his late thirties, stabbed his wife at a home appliance store in the town of Nabaruh, located in the Dakahlia governorate in the Nile Delta.
The woman, in her mid-thirties, was stabbed 16 times and left in critical condition.
The man then reportedly killed his three children aged 12, seven and four at their apartment. Some reports have said he strangled the girl and two boys to death.
He wrote a post on Facebook mourning his children with a photo of them before fleeing to Talkha. There, he reportedly climbed onto a railway bridge and threw himself in front of a passing train, dying immediately.
Upon receiving reports of the crime, Egyptian police found the bodies of three children, while the wife was rushed to hospital in the city of Mansoura to undergo surgery. It was not immediately clear if she survived or succumbed to her wounds.
She was the man’s second wife and not the three children’s mother.
Some media outlets have shared a recording of the father’s call to the children’s grandmother, in which he told her they had “died” and asked her to go to the apartment, leaving her in shock and disbelief.
Witnesses in the area reported hearing screams and cries for help before it became clear that a crime had taken place.
Investigations have been opened “to uncover the motive, determine the sequence of events, and precisely determine the weapon used in the crime,” according to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed. Some reports said he hung the children a
Some reports say previous family disputes may be the reason, but this is yet to be confirmed.
