Majorca, Spain – At least five bodies, found with their hands and feet bound, have washed ashore off the coast of Majorca, prompting a major police investigation into suspected murders. The gruesome discoveries, made over the past month in various locations, have raised fears that the victims are migrants who met a violent end during the perilous sea journey from Algeria to Spain.
Spanish Civil Guard officials in the Balearic Islands suspect a confrontation occurred during the crossing, leading to the migrants being handcuffed and thrown into the sea. This tragic incident adds to a disturbing trend in the region; the Balearic Government Delegation has reported that a total of 31 bodies have been recovered from the beaches and seas around the Balearic Islands between January and June of this year. While many are believed to be migrants who drowned, the discovery of shackled remains suggests a more sinister fate for these latest victims.
Authorities are now working to identify the deceased and establish the exact cause of death. However, police note that a lack of DNA evidence, documentation, and the decomposition of the bodies are making identification incredibly difficult.
The dangerous route from North Africa to Spain is frequently attempted by migrants seeking a better life in Europe. Last year alone, approximately 54,000 undocumented migrants reached Spain by sea or land, according to the country’s Interior Ministry. Spain has also recently announced a three-year plan to grant work permits and residency to 300,000 undocumented migrants, acknowledging the need for foreign workers to support its welfare system and address a declining birthrate.
Further details are expected as the investigation continues into this deeply disturbing case.
