Nigeria has drawn a new line in its relationship with South Africa.

The National Assembly has suspended official visits to South Africa and directed lawmakers and parliamentary officials to boycott South African-hosted legislative activities until further notice.

The decision follows renewed concern over attacks targeting Nigerians and other African migrants in South Africa.

The move is significant because Nigeria and South Africa are two of Africa’s largest economies and most influential political powers.

They compete economically.

They cooperate diplomatically.

Their citizens live and work in both countries.

Yet xenophobic violence has repeatedly strained the relationship.

The Numbers Behind the Anger

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs has said official records indicate that 98 Nigerians have died in mob and hate-related incidents in South Africa since 2022.

The Nigerian government also says 1,695 Nigerians have voluntarily returned to Nigeria in 2026 amid xenophobia-related tensions.

Those figures explain why the latest parliamentary action is more than diplomatic theatre.

For a Nigerian living thousands of kilometres from home, an attack is not an abstract foreign-policy issue. It is personal. It can mean losing a business.

Losing a home. Being forced to flee.

Or, in the worst cases, losing a life.

Why Are Nigerians Being Targeted?

South Africa’s recurring xenophobic tensions are rooted in a complicated mix of unemployment, poverty, competition for economic opportunities, crime and frustration over public services.

Foreigners are sometimes blamed for problems they did not create.

Nigerians have become particularly visible targets because of their large population and economic presence in the country.

But blaming migrants for broader structural problems does not make those problems disappear.

Unemployment does not disappear because a foreigner leaves.

Crime does not disappear.

Poor public services do not disappear.

The danger is that legitimate frustration becomes hatred against people who happen to have been born somewhere else.

Nigeria’s Response

The parliamentary suspension does not mean Nigeria has severed diplomatic relations with South Africa.

Government-to-government engagement remains possible.

But lawmakers have chosen to use parliamentary relations as a form of pressure.

The message is straightforward:Nigeria cannot continue treating attacks on its citizens abroad as routine.

The challenge will be making the protest useful.

Diplomatic action should protect Nigerians, not simply produce headlines.

Nigeria should continue pressing South African authorities to investigate attacks, prosecute offenders and protect foreign nationals.

South Africa, for its part, has a responsibility to ensure that legitimate concerns about jobs, crime and public services do not become excuses for violence against migrants.

The African Contradiction

There is also a painful irony here.Africa has spent decades talking about integration.

The African Continental Free Trade Area encourages greater economic interaction.

Africans are told to think beyond colonial borders.

Yet an African businessman can still be attacked in another African country because of his nationality.

That contradiction deserves serious attention.

Nigeria and South Africa can disagree.

Their citizens can compete.

Their governments can argue. But African integration cannot mean that some Africans are welcome only when their presence is convenient.
