The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has launched an extensive sanitation blitz along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway to dismantle illegal “blackspots” and restore environmental sanity to the critical international transit corridor.
Led by Managing Director/CEO Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the agency conducted a rigorous monitoring and intervention exercise on Saturday, deploying heavy-duty equipment and specialized operational teams to high-traffic zones. The cleanup targeted notorious waste accumulation points in areas including Orile, Doyin, Alaba Rago, Agric, Barracks, Iyana-Iba, and Agbara.
A Push for Sustainability and Health
Dr. Gbadegesin emphasized that the operation is not a one-off event but a core component of a broader environmental sustainability drive. The initiative aims to protect public health by eliminating breeding grounds for disease and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the gateway corridor.
”This intervention is about maintaining urban aesthetics and ensuring that our major transit routes reflect the standards of a mega-city,” Gbadegesin stated. He noted that the accumulation of waste in these areas often stems from illegal dumping by residents and transit-based traders.

Enforcement and Compliance
To ensure the expressway does not return to its previous state, LAWMA is shifting from mere evacuation to strict enforcement. Dr. Gbadegesin warned that surveillance has been intensified, and individuals or businesses caught dumping waste indiscriminately will face the full weight of environmental laws.
The Authority issued a stern call to action for:
- Residents: To bag waste properly and utilize assigned PSP operators.
- Traders: To maintain cleanliness around stalls and avoid using road medians as dumpsites.
- Transport Operators: To ensure commuters do not litter from moving vehicles.
As the cleanup continues, LAWMA maintains that the cooperation of the public is the only way to achieve a “Greater Lagos” that is both clean and habitable for all.
