Lagos Resumes Compensation for Oworonshoki Demolition Victims

Lagos State Government has resumed and expanded compensation payments to residents of Oworonshoki affected by the ongoing demolition of environmentally unsafe buildings. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration affirms commitment to fairness, transparency, and the welfare of displaced residents, reiterating that resettlement and compensation will continue in multiple phases. Compensation ranges from ₦1 million to ₦5 million based on the value of demolished properties, with over 179 beneficiaries paid so far in two batches.

The Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), through its General Manager Oladimeji Animashaun, confirmed the continuation of compensation following the initial disbursement to 79 affected residents. He emphasized the government’s stance that no resident will be denied property rights amid the renewal initiative designed to address unsafe living conditions in Oworonshoki. Beneficiaries have expressed appreciation, recognizing the payments as timely relief amid displacement.

In the face of public concern and claims of unlawful demolition amidst a court order, Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Lawal Pedro (SAN) dismissed allegations that the government willfully disobeyed any court directive. He explained that no official court order was served on the government prior to recent demolition phases, which began about a month ago and were temporarily suspended by the governor to allow extra time for relocation and compensation. Pedro accused some litigants of abusing the court system to impede the exercise and reiterated the government’s commitment to due process and public interest.

The demolition targets illegal structures on government-acquired land deemed environmental hazards. The urban renewal project plans to provide improved housing, infrastructure, and safer living conditions for Oworonshoki, supported by local lawmakers and community leaders who describe the initiative as development with dignity and urban regeneration.
