​Lagos Father-in-Law Arrested for Locking Widow Out

A 28-year-old widow, Tosin, has become the subject of public concern after she was allegedly locked out of her husband’s home by her father-in-law only eight days after the man’s death in Lagos. The incident, which has sparked outrage online, was brought to public attention by activist Harrison Gwamnishu, who shared video evidence showing the father-in-law padlocking the compound gate.

According to the activist, the widow’s husband died on July 20, 2026, after which some members of his family reportedly moved into the deceased’s residence in Ikorodu and began taking control of the property. Gwamnishu alleged that Tosin was instructed to pack her belongings and those of her two young sons into a single room, while some of her late husband’s possessions were being shared among relatives.

The case has raised fresh concerns about widowhood, inheritance disputes and family intimidation in Nigeria, particularly where young women are left to defend themselves and their children shortly after bereavement. The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency said it was alerted to the viral report and immediately contacted the widow. The agency said Tosin alleged threats to her life, physical assault and intimidation, and confirmed that the matter had already been reported to the Owutu Police Division.punchng+1

The agency further stated that it had begun working with the investigating police officers on the matter, adding that preliminary feedback confirmed the alleged perpetrator had been arrested and is currently in custody while investigations continue.punchng+1

The Lagos State Government said it remained committed to protecting the widow and her children and ensuring justice under the law. It also urged members of the public to continue reporting cases of domestic and sexual violence through the state’s official channels.
