Koroma Returns to Freetown After Two-Year Nigerian Exile

​Former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma has touched down in Freetown, ending more than two years of self-imposed and diplomatic exile in Nigeria. His homecoming follows the official discontinuation of high-profile treason charges by the Sierra Leonean government.

​Koroma, who governed the West African nation from 2007 to 2018, originally departed for Abuja in January 2024 via a presidential jet after receiving judicial clearance for medical treatment. The departure came in the wake of a tumultuous political crisis sparked by the November 2023 Freetown barracks attacks, which authorities characterized as a failed coup attempt. Though Koroma consistently maintained his innocence, the legal proceedings cast a long shadow over the nation’s political landscape.

​The breakthrough for his return materialized in July, when the Sierra Leonean Ministry of Justice officially dropped all criminal proceedings against the former leader. High-level regional diplomacy—spearheaded by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, and former Nigerian leader Olusegun Obasanjo alongside Nigerian Foreign Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu—played a critical role in facilitating a peaceful resolution.

​Jonathan, who personally saw Koroma off at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja alongside Nigerian government delegates, described the exit as the culmination of quiet, sustained confidence-building dialogues with Freetown authorities.

​Addressing the press upon his arrival, Koroma expressed relief to be back on home soil and signaled his readiness to contribute to national consultations. Political analysts view his reintegration as a vital step toward national healing and reconciliation ahead of Sierra Leone’s broader political milestones.
