The Bayelsa State Police Command has apprehended the abductors behind the recent kidnap of High Court Judge, Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro, following a determined manhunt. Justice Omukoro was kidnapped on June 21 in Yenagoa and held captive for 12 days before a coordinated effort by security forces led to his safe release.
Governor Douye Diri confirmed the arrest of all gang members involved—except the ringleader, who remains at large—during the state executive council meeting on Wednesday in Yenagoa. He commended the commitment of security agencies and reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance stance toward crime.

“We have greatly improved our crime fighting efforts using technology. In the recent kidnap of a serving judge in the state, we were able to get him released unhurt. All those who committed the crime were apprehended except one that is still on the run. Bayelsa State has zero tolerance to crime and criminality,” Governor Diri stated.
The governor announced enhancements to the state’s security architecture, including new police drones and expanded CCTV coverage across Yenagoa.
Police Officer Honoured for Integrity
At the same event, Governor Diri recognised Superintendent of Police Sentome Obi for his exemplary integrity. SP Obi was celebrated for refusing a $17,000 bribe from a suspect in an organ-harvesting investigation. In recognition, the governor awarded Obi a three-bedroom house and a car, and recommended him for promotion.
Governor Diri praised the officer’s honesty and dedication:

“SP Obi did not only make the state proud, he also bolstered the image of the Nigerian Police. I urge other officers to emulate his shining example.”
Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Francis Idu, also congratulated Obi and highlighted the importance of continued investment in security for the protection of lives and property.
