KANO/AGADEZ/MADAMA — Every year, tens of thousands of Nigerians vanish into the Sahara Desert chasing a dream of Europe, and the world mostly learns of them through cold statistics, IOM tallies of the dead, the missing, the returned.

This month, one of Nigeria’s most fearless journalists decided a headcount was not enough.

Fisayo Soyombo, founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism, spent 47 days living the journey himself, travelling undercover as a migrant from Kano through Niger’s most notorious trafficking hubs into Libya, to show — not just tell, what the desert route actually costs.

ValidViewNetwork can confirm that Soyombo’s investigation, published in a three-part series titled “UNDERCOVER: Europe Through the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea,” documents deaths, starvation, torture, extortion, sexual exploitation and what he describes as modern-day enslavement.

The above were inflicted on Nigerian, Ghanaian, Nigerien, South Sudanese, Eritrean and Somali migrants by traffickers who, in his own account, treat dogs better than black Africans.

A journey built on genuine risk, not stagecraft

This is not performative danger. Findings by ValidViewNetwork show Soyombo left Kano on May 22, 2026, carrying a hidden GPS tracker monitored hourly by a backroom team so that, in his words, if something went wrong, someone would at least know where.

Over the following weeks he was funnelled through a chain of “connection men” and traffickers, a system he documents typically involves 20 to 30 handlers between Nigeria and Libya.

He recounts losing control of his money, his movement, and at critical moments, his safety.

According to reports gotten by ValidViewNetwork, the account details 18 days stranded in Agadez alone, including 13 spent confined to a bare room in a trafficker’s house while his skin blistered and peeled from extreme heat; forced unpaid labour digging vehicles out of sand and mud at knifepoint; migrants slapped, whipped and robbed at military checkpoints for sums as small as 5,000 CFA; and nights sleeping directly on desert sand in temperatures that swing from scorching by day to freezing by night.

He documents fellow travellers who died of dehydration, one buried in the open desert, another simply abandoned.

ValidViewNetwork gathered that Soyombo ties the exodus directly to Nigeria’s deepening poverty crisis, citing World Bank figures showing poverty climbing to 63 per cent in 2025 and PwC projections of 141 million Nigerians — 62 per cent of the population, living in poverty by 2026.

Every migrant he encountered, he reports, was driven by the same singular hope: escape into some form of economic survival, whatever the odds against them.

Soyombo’s plunge into the migration underworld sits in a proud, painful tradition of Nigerian journalists risking their own bodies to expose what statistics cannot.

In 2014, Premium Times reporter Tobore Ovuorie spent weeks undercover inside a Lagos-to-Cotonou-to-Europe sex-trafficking pipeline for her landmark investigation “Bought and Sold,” an assignment so harrowing it later inspired the acclaimed Netflix film Oloture.

ValidViewNetwork readers who have not seen it should: it remains one of the most searing dramatisations of what undercover reporting on trafficking actually demands of the journalists who do it.

Soyombo’s new series updates that legacy for 2026, trading the trafficking-for-sex pipeline for the desert-and-sea migration route, but carrying the same unbearable price tag: real money spent, real risk absorbed, and a real body sent into harm’s way, because some truths simply cannot be told any other way.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the series’ concluding part is still to be published, expected to carry Soyombo’s account through Libya’s al-Gatrun and Sabha and, ultimately, the Mediterranean crossing itself, the leg of the journey that has already claimed thousands of lives this year alone. ValidViewNetwork reports.
