Edo Governor Defends Tinubu Reforms, Cites High UK Fuel Costs

​BENIN CITY — Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has thrown his weight behind the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu, urging Nigerians to exercise patience as the administration lays the groundwork for national stability and long-term prosperity.

​Speaking in Benin City during the launch of the “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” initiative, Okpebholo likened the current economic hardship to the turbulent takeoff phase of an aircraft, assuring citizens that the nation is steadily approaching a “cruising level” where the dividends of these difficult reforms will become apparent.

​”When a plane is taking off, do you see them serving food? They will never give you food until that seatbelt is released—that means on a cruising level,” Okpebholo explained. “I want to let you know, very soon Nigeria will be on the cruising level.”

​Defending the administration against widespread criticism over the rising cost of living and petrol prices following subsidy removals, the governor drew comparisons with the United Kingdom. He shared that a recent trip to London prompted him to check pump prices firsthand, noting that after currency conversion, fuel costs over 3,000 Naira per litre abroad. He argued that Nigerians are paying comparatively less and praised the President’s economic stewardship.

​Highlighting infrastructural progress, Okpebholo pointed to widespread concrete pavement road constructions across the country as proof of purposeful governance.

​Looking ahead to the political landscape, the Edo governor strongly endorsed President Tinubu for another term, echoing the sentiments of the Oba of Benin that a working leader should not be replaced.

​”Is Aso Rock vacant? So Aso Rock is not vacant,” Okpebholo stated, maintaining that both Edo State and Nigeria at large are secure and progressing under current leadership.
