The global music community is mourning the loss of Cassandra Wilson, the trailblazing vocalist, songwriter, and producer whose dark, smoky contralto and fearless genre-bending redefined modern jazz. Wilson died on Wednesday morning, September 2, 2026, at the age of 70 at her home in her native Jackson, Mississippi. According to the Hinds County Coroner’s Office, she passed away from natural causes surrounded by family, close friends, and her longtime manager, Robert Torre.
Torre confirmed the news, remembering the legendary artist for a life deeply embedded in the spirit of American music.
Born in Jackson in 1955, Wilson grew up immersed in a rich soundtrack of her father’s jazz collection and her mother’s love for Motown. Trained initially in classical piano, clarinet, and guitar, she relocated to New York City in the early 1980s, where she quickly became a foundational pillar of the avant-garde M-Base collective alongside saxophonist Steve Coleman.
Over a career spanning three decades and 19 studio albums, Wilson systematically dismantled the borders separating jazz from blues, country, folk, and pop. Her distinctive interpretations—ranging from traditional jazz standards to unexpected covers of Bob Dylan, U2, and Neil Young—earned her widespread critical acclaim. In 2001, Time magazine honored her as “America’s Best Singer”.
Her brilliance on record yielded two Grammy Awards: Best Jazz Vocal Performance in 1997 for her masterwork New Moon Daughter, and Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2009 for Loverly. In 2022, the National Endowment for the Arts formally recognized her monumental contributions by naming her an NEA Jazz Master.
Beyond her extensive collaborations with luminaries like Wynton Marsalis, the Roots, Luther Vandross, and Angélique Kidjo, Wilson spent her later years returning to her Mississippi roots. In 2015, she moved back to Jackson, where she continued championing local culture, co-founding a community jazz venue and independent label to nurture the next generation of southern artists.
She is survived by her son, Jeris Wilson. Memorial arrangements and tributes are expected to be announced by her family in the coming days.
